How to know a shrimp tank is cycled

Evidence review: August 10, 2026

A tank is not cycled because it is four weeks old, looks clear, contains nitrate or received a bottle of bacteria. In useful operational language, the system is commissioned when it repeatedly processes a known nitrogen challenge at the filter, flow, temperature and planting conditions in which it will operate. The filtration guide separates the device, attached community, oxygen, flow and intake functions.

That is evidence of processing capacity, not proof that a particular shrimp will survive. A 2026 transport review reported no empirical physiological response studies or transport-specific nitrogenous-waste thresholds in the ornamental shrimp literature it surveyed.6 A separate 2023 thesis provides one acute 96-hour juvenile N. davidi experiment, not a transport threshold, chronic aquarium target or validation of the hobby's nominal 2 ppm in 24 hours rule. See the nitrogen evidence guide.

The short version: challenge the complete fishless system with a measured ammonia source, then test total ammonia nitrogen and nitrite. If both are not detected on the chosen methods within the recorded interval, the system processed that tested load. Record the dose, units, time, pH, temperature, methods and first nonzero reporting steps so the result can be repeated.

What the aquarium research shows

Freshwater aquarium biofilters are living surface communities, not one bottled species. Studies have associated ammonia oxidation with ammonia-oxidising archaea, ammonia-oxidising bacteria and complete ammonia-oxidising Nitrospira. Other Nitrospira oxidise nitrite.12 Sponge and ceramic filter media provide surfaces with flow and oxygen delivery, but the community that establishes depends on the system.

A 2025 study followed three newly established home aquariums for twelve weeks. Ammonia and nitrite were below the study's detection limits by week three in two aquariums and week eight in the third. The authors did not quantify nitrogen input, could not calculate a nitrification rate, and observed different microbial successions among tanks.3 The finding is not a recommended fish-in cycle. It demonstrates why a universal calendar does not measure function.

What a result proves, and what it does not

ObservationWhat it supportsWhat it does not prove
Ammonia and nitrite not detected on the methods now The sample did not produce a reading at or above those methods' first nonzero reporting steps How much new input the system can process, or absolute chemical zero
Nitrate is present Nitrate exists in the sample That it came from this biofilter. Source water and fertiliser can add it, while plants and water changes can remove it
The tank has run for a number of weeks Its age is known Nitrogen-processing capacity or juvenile food access
Bottled bacteria or seeded media was added An inoculation attempt occurred That the organisms were viable, established or matched the future load
A known challenge is processed in a recorded interval The complete system processed that challenge under those conditions A species toxicity limit, future overload capacity or every other hazard

Our fishless commissioning protocol

Our practice This is a conservative operational load test for our systems. It is not presented as a shrimp toxicity threshold, an aquarium-wide definition of "cycled" or the only valid challenge.

  1. Assemble the whole animal-free system: dechlorinated water, normal filter and flow, intended media, plants and ordinary operating temperature. Testing with plants measures the complete system, including plant uptake, rather than isolating the biofilter.
  2. Use an aquarium ammonium chloride product with a known dose. Do not improvise with a household cleaner whose additives are unknown. Record the product, calculated dose and the exact analyte, reporting basis and units printed by the ammonia test.
  3. During establishment, measure total ammonia and nitrite on a schedule the test can resolve, preserving both reporting bases. A reading that has not declined is a result, not a reason to add animals or keep redosing blindly.
  4. Once neither is detected on the registered methods, Molt & Moss raises the same hobby total-ammonia reading to a nominal 2 ppm for its house load test. This number is deliberately labelled house practice. The product and test may report different chemical forms or nitrogen units, so do not copy a dose between products.
  5. Record total ammonia and nitrite with exact reporting bases at the start and 24 hours later, with pH and temperature. Nitrate is useful context but is not required as proof.
  6. A house pass is neither nitrogen analyte detected at or above its registered method's first nonzero reporting step at 24 hours. Repeat once if any dose, timing or colour reading was uncertain.
  7. Before stocking, use water changes as needed to return nitrate, GH, KH, TDS, pH and temperature to the documented receiving recipe. Re-test ammonia and nitrite.

A system that fails the challenge is not assigned a new waiting period. Check the dose calculation, chlorine or chloramine treatment, flow, oxygenation, pH, filter disturbance and test method, then continue measuring. The result, not a promised day, decides the next step.

Seeded media and bottled products

Moving established filter media can carry a functioning community and may shorten establishment, but the receiving conditions and tested load still differ. Transfer media only from a system whose disease and treatment history you accept, keep it wet and oxygenated, and verify it after transfer.

Product category is not performance evidence. In one controlled 14-day comparison, only one of five quick-start products significantly reduced ammonia relative to the controls; the authors advised against using these products as the sole method for initiating a freshwater cycle.4 Storage, age, formulation and the receiving system can all differ. Add the product if you choose, then measure the tank.

Cycled is not the same as food-ready

Nitrification and shrimp grazing habitat overlap on surfaces, but one does not measure the other. A biofilm-based N. davidi culture study completed the life cycle on tested artificial substrates and found substrate-related differences in juvenile survival and growth.5 It did not establish a universal number of weeks, prove that visible film is nutritionally complete, or show that prepared feeds are unnecessary in every tank. Separate surface, shelter and bottom chemistry in the habitat guide.

Our practice We condition moss, wood, leaves and filter surfaces before stocking, and transplant material from a healthy known system when biosecurity permits. We assess grazing surfaces separately from the nitrogen load test and keep feeding as a measured input, not an age-based assumption.
