First independent review round

Eight assignments were frozen before invitations: two each for taxonomy, experimental design, husbandry and evidence synthesis.

Prepared locally; no invitations or completed reviews claimed. Assignment preparation is not independent review. Reviewers are asked for criticism, not endorsement, and declines or conflicts remain part of the round record.

The complete review packet exposes all fourteen consequential claims. This first round limits each initial invitation to one claim inside one declared lens so neither reviewer scope nor easy-item selection can drift after responses begin.

Round rules

  1. Invite one reviewer for one assignment initially. A second assignment follows only after the first response is complete and remains inside the reviewer's declared lens.
  2. Do not select reviewers for expected agreement. Record declines, conflicts, unavailable expertise and source-access barriers without replacing them silently.
  3. Provide packet version, exact claim, trace, comparison when assigned, all six common review questions and the same response template.
  4. Require relevant experience and relationship disclosure. Compensation, authorship, commercial ties and prior collaboration do not disappear because they are inconvenient.
  5. Classify every completed response through one finite outcome and propagate accepted changes before asking for endorsement or another review.
  6. Review round progress only after two completed reviewers span at least two lenses; this is a first evidence checkpoint, not whole-site validation.

Colour proves the species or purity of a line

Why selected: Species names, visible phenotype, market labels and later taxonomic reassignment are easy to collapse into one identity claim, and that error can propagate through sourcing and breeding records.

Reviewer scope: Audit the published source taxon, specimens, characters, loci, reference material, accepted-name use and every transfer from a population result to a photographed or traded animal.

Consequential failure to check: The project silently modernizes a historical name, authenticates a photographed animal or line from colour, or treats one barcode, database or trade label as complete identity.

Taxonomy and identity

Mixed colours always turn brown or clear in two generations

Why selected: The project separates visible phenotype, environmental plasticity, pigmentation mechanisms and documented ancestry while rejecting deterministic seller-chart inheritance claims.

Reviewer scope: Audit whether the wording distinguishes phenotype, line name, pedigree, source population, genetic inference and complete F1 or F2 outcome records without overstating molecular studies.

Consequential failure to check: The project implies that named colour lines have authenticated genetic identity, predicts an undocumented cross or converts environmental colour change into evidence for or against inherited lineage.

Experimental design and statistics

Warmer water always makes shrimp grow and breed better

Why selected: Several direct experiments report different temperature-related endpoints, creating a high-risk opportunity to confuse faster development with better reproduction, welfare or lifetime outcome.

Reviewer scope: Audit experimental units, allocation, temperatures, durations, life stages, endpoint separation, denominators and whether the reconciliation transfers beyond each tested protocol.

Consequential failure to check: The synthesis selects one favorable endpoint, mistakes animals for independent treatment units or turns a study temperature into a universal optimum or safe interval.

Experimental design and statistics

A tank can hold a fixed number of shrimp per gallon

Why selected: The density evidence is direct but narrow, and a mistaken experimental-unit or transfer inference can become an appealing shrimp-per-gallon rule for complete multigeneration aquaria.

Reviewer scope: Audit vessel replication, unequal starting counts, repeated group weighing, pooled biochemical material, model-estimated survival and transfer from juvenile grow-out vessels to home colonies.

Consequential failure to check: The project treats individual shrimp as independent density replicates, hides pooling or attrition, or converts a short vessel experiment into a home-aquarium capacity formula.

Aquatic husbandry and welfare

A fixed quarantine period proves shrimp are clean

Why selected: Biosecurity advice can create false confidence or encourage unnecessary prophylactic treatment when separation, observation, organism detection and clearance are compressed into one clock.

Reviewer scope: Audit whether the actions preserve separate contact networks, dedicated wet equipment, welfare-conscious observation, uncertainty about detection and a defined release decision without claiming pathogen-free status.

Consequential failure to check: The project presents one duration as clearance, recommends routine unverified treatment, ignores equipment-mediated contact or implies that visual normality protects an established colony.

Aquatic husbandry and welfare

Peaceful fish are shrimp-safe

Why selected: Adult coexistence is often sold as compatibility even though juvenile recruitment, injury, chronic behavior and welfare require different observations and safeguards.

Reviewer scope: Audit whether the guidance distinguishes adult display from recruitment, names fish identity and size, preserves habitat and life-stage context and avoids recruiting uncontrolled risky introductions.

Consequential failure to check: The project supplies a universal safe-fish list, treats surviving adults as juvenile outcome evidence or recommends a tankmate trial without complete counts and humane stopping authority.

Evidence synthesis and science communication

Neocaridina clean the tank

Why selected: Direct grazing, surface removal, litter processing and water-column nutrient results can all be true while supporting very different claims about cleaning and whole-system export.

Reviewer scope: Audit the mapping from each source method to compartment and endpoint, the reconciliation of local removal with material recycling and the accessibility of the practical decision boundary.

Consequential failure to check: The synthesis averages unlike outcomes, hides a contrary compartment, implies total waste export or markets an animal as maintenance equipment rather than describing bounded grazing behavior.

Evidence synthesis and science communication

Any copper kills shrimp or copper is safe

Why selected: Mortality, biochemical response, transcript change, nominal exposure and water-chemistry context are frequently flattened into absolute product-safety or lethal-concentration claims.

Reviewer scope: Audit chemical identity, exposure verification, taxon, endpoint, duration, experimental unit, water chemistry and the boundary between a laboratory response and a household care threshold.

Consequential failure to check: The project converts a molecular response or short no-death result into a universal safe number, certifies a product from an ingredient label or implies a treatment dose.

Finite response outcomes

A substantive response must receive one recorded outcome rather than remaining an informal comment.

Completed critiques use the evidence challenge. Accepted changes must finish their correction-impact checklist before the response can be marked propagated.
